Fudgecicle 5K

Race #3 in the Fudgcicle 5K Series)

I suppose it had to happen sooner or later.  This morning the thermometer reads zero degrees.  Zero!  There are NO DEGREES AT ALL out there!

Who knows that the wind chill is?  (Something that could freeze helium, probably.)

So I cover every inch of exposed skin...

...and head to Tewksbury, MA, for the third race in the Fudgecicle 5K series. Bob and Sally Hansford, the race directors, host the Fudgecicle every Saturday morning in January and February--regardless of weather.  (8:00 AM at Tewksbury High School, in Tewksbury, MA.)

Everyone is snugly wrapped when Bob says "Go!" and we take off...

I'm taking pictures as I run.

(Yes, I take photos as I run. I don't stop or slow down.  After all, I'm in a race!)  I won't let the cold stop me.

But this arctic air is like something out of Jack London's classic, To Build a Fire.  My camera can't take it.  It freezes in my grip after taking a mere handful of pictures and won't respond no matter what button I press.  So I run with a dead camera, and try to flex my numb fingers in a losing struggle to keep the blood flowing.

When I reach the finish line, I grab a backup camera from my car.  (Happily, this one isn't frozen!)

As you can see, after the race the other runners have ice on their eyebrows but big smiles on their faces!  Even in this nightmarish chill, everyone loves the Fudgecicle 5K!

If you click on the “Play” button in the center of the photo below, you can view my slideshow, and join me as we run the third Fudgcicle 5K of 2009.  (Go ahead...  Press the button!  Run with Ken!)
