
Early in February I suffered a back injury, which made it impossible for me to walk. For a number of weeks, I could not take more than a few, very slow, very painful steps. Ten days ago I was finally able to walk, so I put on my running shoes and went for a short run. Maybe a third of a mile--but it was a start.
Since then I've built up my distance to 3 miles...but that was on the very forgiving surface of a dirt trail. I'm hoping I can run that far today on the hard asphalt of city streets. But I don't want to re-injure my back, so if this doesn't feel right I'll just step over to the curb and take a bus back to the start line.
I'm carrying a small camera as I run, and I take lots of pictures during the race.
