At the 1-mile Sharkfest Swim across Newport Harbor in Newport, RI (September 28, 2013)

Open water swimming is nothing like swimming in a lap pool!
As you can see in this photo, it is a Contact Sport!

(I was just a few feet from these swimmers when I took this photo.
Yes, I was swimming--as fast as I can!  After all, I was in the race, too!)

At the 1-mile Sharkfest Swim across Newport Harbor in Newport, RI (September 28, 2013)

If you're a swimmer, there's one moment you anticipate before every race...
and remember long after you've exited the water and changed into dry clothes.

It's that extraordinary moment when you fly through the air like SUPERMAN!

(I took this photo just a moment before I, too, was airborne off the dock--
about to swim a mile across Newport Harbor in the Sharkfest Swim across Newport Harbor,
a terrific race produced by Envirosports and Streamline Events.)

At the 1-mile Sharkfest Swim across Newport Harbor in Newport, RI (September 28, 2013)

I joined 125-150 other open water swimmers today at the inaugural
1-mile Sharkfest Swim Across Newport Harbor, in Newport, RI.
(A great race produced by Envirosports and Streamline Events)

Water temp was just 62 degrees. (Brrrr! :)

Almost everyone was clad head to toe in neoprene.
Barely a handful of us swam without a wetsuit. But I loved it!

At the Buzzards Bay Sprint Triathlon in Westport, MA (September 22, 2013)

Triathlon is a study in contrasts.  The open water swim is a contact sport.
Other athletes might swim over your back, or kick you in the head!

But once you mount your bike you are almost alone.  Rules forbid drafting--
so you'll ride for mile after mile surrounded only by your own thoughts.

As you can see in this photo I took at the Buzzards Bay Sprint Triathlon.

(This cyclist was just behind me.  A camera on my bike took this photo as I rode.)

Newcomers to the sport of triathlon think they have to master three disciplines: swimming, cycling, and running.

But when they have completed their first Tri they learn that there is an all-important FOURTH discipline: the Transition!

Here's a triathlete sprinting through T1 like a veteran!

(I took this photo as I ran my bike through T1, just ahead of him.)

I took this photo as I was launching myself into the harbor.

Unlike these swimmers (and the vast majority of athletes at the race)
I wore no wetsuit.  Just a pair of nylon swim trunks.

Water temp was 60 degrees.  Mighty cold!

Dangerous thunderstorms cancelled the swim leg of the triathlon--
so the athletes burst from the start line into a RUN for the first leg of this Tri (now a DUathlon.)

At any race, the athletes who fill me with joy are the ones who run...swim...and ride their bikes with their Mom or Dad...

or their son or daughter. This is Family Time brought to a whole new level!

Look at this photo and tell me that you
don't feel the love...
and the shared joy of this mother and daughter in getting out to run, swim, and ride!

HURRAY for this Ace bandage! It let me run today (after I twisted my ankle on a rocky trail yesterday)

I twisted my ankle yesterday, on a predawn run down a rocky trail.  Stupid, yes.

It swelled in the afternoon and more so overnight...so this morning

I gave it some massage, to move the fluid out of the foot, and then applied an Ace bandage.

Amazing!  Within an hour I could stand on the foot, and later in the morning I could walk normally.

A few hours later I ran a hilly mile with no discomfort.

Thank you, Dr. Ace Bandage!

A challenging mountain race is really TWO races:
the race to the summit, and the barely-controlled downhill dance to the finish line!

I felt like I was flying at the Race Around Waltham (RAW) Series Prospect Bandit Run...
and this runner just behind me really WAS flying!

When you swim you become PART of the earth and sky.  Totally immersed in it!

I took this photo as I swam in Hero Triathlon (Olympic Distance) on Cape Cod.  This swimmer was next to me.
I didn't stop or slow my pace.  We were both swimming as fast as we can!

Swimming through a DAZZLING arc of spray! Open Water Swimmer at the Hero Triathlon on Cape Cod.

I didn't stop or slow down.  We were both swimming as fast as we can!

At the Hero Triathlon (Olympic-distance) on Cape Cod in Mashpee, MA (September 8, 2013)

My first-ever Podium Finish at a TRIATHLON! At the Hero Triathlon (Olympic-distance) on Cape Cod in Mashpee, MA.

I entered my first triathlon in 2005. In the next few years I ran half a dozen Olympic-distance Tri's and perhaps three times that many Sprints. But I never won an award. Never even imagined the possibility.

Today, however, at the Streamline Events Cape Cod Hero Triathlon, I heard my name on the loudspeaker and was called up to the podium to receive an award as 3rd-place finisher in my age group.

What a surprise! I did not swim, bike, or run for speed. I swam with a camera and took photos of the other swimmers; I biked with a camera and took photos of the other cyclists, and of course I took photos of the other runners as I ran. My goal was not a finish time, but great photos from "inside the pack" that I could publish as Run With Ken.

Nevertheless, I swam, biked, and ran as fast as I could. And apparently that was fast enough to earn me a medal!

Every morning before dawn I run up a steep road and a rocky trail...
...to the top of the highest hill for miles around.  There I watch the sun rise.

Then I run home!

Some runners radiate joy with every step. Take a look at this photo and you'll see what I mean!

I took this photo as I watched the Bad Habit Productions 5K, a scenic race along the Charles River that benefits the Bad Habit Productions performance group.

It is one of several 5Ks along that scenic route put on each year by 3C Race productions.

After swimming, cycling, and running a terrific triathlon in Salem, MA...I rewarded myself with these delicious scallop Po' Boys at local brewpub.   Ahhhh!   Delicious!

(They served a platter of three Po Boy sliders.  They were so seductive I lifted one to my mouth and savored it in three or four bites...before it occurred to me that maybe I should take a picture of these delights.  So I grabbed my camera and took this photo before I moved on to Scallop Po Boy Number Two!! :)

At the PawSox 5K in Pawtucket, RI (August 31, 2013)

I ran the PawSox 5K.  It started and ended at the Pawtucket Red Sox stadium. I took this photo as I ran.

(Yes, I was running as I took this photo.  Didn't stop or slow my pace.  Afte all, I was in a race!)

These runners were just behind me. Note the guy on the right. In just about every photo I took, he was RUNNING ON AIR!!
