At the Monster Dash 5K in Marshfield, MA (October 27, 2013)

I took this photo while running alongside this runner.
(Yes, I was running.  Didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

At the Guild School Trick or Treat 5K in Waltham, MA (October 26, 2013)

I've never been to a ballet.  Call me a Philistine.  But I see grace and beauty in every runner at every race.

Like this woman...toeing off as she leaps to the finish line of the Guild School Trick or Treat 5K in Waltham!

(I had just run the race; then walked back a few yards to cheer on
other runners as they flew to the finish line.  That's where I took this photo.)

At the Monster Dash 5K in Marshfield, MA (October 27, 2013)

These runners were just behind me when I took this photo.

Uh, oh.  A cop chasing me!  (So of course I ran even faster!)

At the Guild School Trick or Treat 5K in Waltham, MA (October 26, 2013)

Amazing!  Look at these two runners: all four of their feet are in the air!

They were just behind me as I took this photo.
(Yes, I was running.  Didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

Runners in costume...or in warm or cool-weather running clothes...leaping down the road!

These runners were just behind me, a few seconds into the race.
I took this photo as I was running.  (Didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

At the Guild School Trick or Treat 5K in Waltham, MA (October 26, 2013)

What makes a race so exhilarating?  We are part of an amazing stream:
so many runners, so close together, all of us FLYING!

I was just ahead of these runners when I took this photo.
(Yes, I was running.  Did not stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

At the Monster Dash 5K in Marshfield, MA (October 27, 2013)

Road races are not just for humans.

The best races aren't purely about the competition.
They're a gathering for the whole community--including Man's Best Friend.

(I took this photo just before the start of a Halloween road race, of a canine looking very stylish in his costume!)

At the Guild School Trick or Treat 5K in Waltham, MA (October 26, 2013)

I took this photo just moments into the race.  These runners were just behind me.

At the Guild School Trick or Treat 5K in Waltham, MA (October 26, 2013)

After years of running at the back of the pack I am always amazed to finish first in my category.

Today I ran this 5K in 22:27 (a 7:15 pace.)  Very fast for me!
I credit the cold blast of winter that descended from Canada.  I always run faster in the cold.

At the Jennifers 5K in Lowell, MA (October 12, 2013)

Bridges!  Large or small: I love them all!

Is there anything more special than running over a bridge?

You are outside...and yet INSIDE the bridge.  You are under the sky...and yet OVER a river!

I had just run over this bridge when I took this photo.
(Yes, I was running.  Did not stop or slow my pace.  After all--I was in a race!)

At the Mike Donohoe 5K in Georgetown, MA (October 20, 2013)

Some small town races feel like a big family--
and never more so than when EVERYONE erupts in cheers
for a hometown favorite as she sprints to the finish line!

At the Friends of Nashoba 5K in Westford, MA (October 19, 2013)

One of the things I love about running is how it brings together people of all ages.
In any race you'll see teenagers running side-by-side with folks in their sixties.
We push each other to our best efforts!

These runners were just behind me when I took this photo.
(Yes, I was running.  I didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all--I was in a race!)

Look at him go!  His feet never touch the ground!

(I had just crossed the finish line a minute or so earlier,
and took this photo soon after I exited from the chute.)

At the Friends of Nashoba 5K in Westford, MA (October 19, 2013)

In most of my photos the athlete is the star.  But in this one the rolling New England landscape is the star!

I took this photo as I was running.   These runners...and the rolling road...were behind me.
(I didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

Autumn Run in Lexington, MA (October 23, 2013)

Some of us run alone.  Some walk with a friend.
Doesn't matter. We're enjoying the same brisk air, and the near-empty streets.

(I took this photo in mile 5 of my longest run in months:
a 10K solo run on a morning that brought a taste of winter in the air.)

At the Mike Donohoe 5K in Georgetown, MA (October 20, 2013)

As you can see...barefoot runners are ALWAYS smiling!

(I took this photo as I was running.
Didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all--I was in a race!)

Why do I love to run? Because runners clearly have so much FUN!

At the Mike Donohoe 5K in Georgetown, MA (October 20, 2013)

Have you ever gone body-surfing after a storm?
The waves are huge...and they pick you up and hurl you towards shore.

That's what it's like to run at the start of the pack in a race filled with excited runners!

I took this photo just a few seconds into the race.  These runners were just behind me.
(Yes, I was running.  I didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

At the Boston Barefoot Running Festival 5K in Boston, MA (September 14, 2013)

When you run along the Charles River in Boston and Cambridge, you always see rowers out on the water.
A beautiful sight to see!

I photographed this rower as I ran in the Boston Barefoot Running Festival 5K a month ago.

I was running upriver.  She was rowing downriver.

Tomorrow (Oct 19) and Sunday (Oct 20) the Charles River will be FILLED with rowers
from all over the world, competing in the Head of the Charles Regatta!

At the Wild Fish 1 and 2-mile Swim in Salem, MA (August 4, 2013)

(I took this photo as I was swimming in the pack.  Didn't stop or slow my stroke.  After all--I was in a race!)

Does this photo familiar?
I published the original of this photo in August.  It had a distracting streak:

I decided to edit the image a bit, to remove that streak.  The edited image is what  you see at the top of this blog post.

At the Jennifers 5K in Lowell, MA (October 12, 2013)

What makes us run faster?  YOU know the answer to that:
The cheers of our family...friends...and enthusiastic strangers!

To everyone who has ever cheered a runner, cyclist, or swimmer:  THANK YOU!

The Merrimack River jump-started the Industrial Revolution...
and it also gives us some energy to run a bit faster!

(But he didn't stay there for long!  He passed me a minute or two after I took this photo. :)

At the Jennifers 5K in Lowell, MA (October 12, 2013)

Most of us runners don't give it much thought--but our efforts would be for naught
if not for the professional attention of our race timers.

So...to every timer at every race--THANK YOU!

At the Boston Barefoot Running Festival 5K in Boston, MA (September 14, 2013)

Rare photo of Ken Bob Saxton, the Father of the barefoot running movement,
proving that he can actually LEVITATE while running!

At the Scituate Duathlon in Scituate, MA (October 6, 2013)

Look at her go!

A moment earlier she ducked and ran UNDER that horizontal pole--without breaking stride!

I was running my bike to my transition spot when I took this photo.

At the Scituate Duathlon in Scituate, MA (October 6, 2013)

I was on my bike, cycling in the duathlon when this cyclist passed me.

(A camera on my bike took this photo.)

What really strikes me is her focus...her concentration.
(Necessary at this race, on roads wet from continuing rain.)

At the Mystic Marauders Triathlon in Winchester, MA (October 5, 2013)

The last triathlon of the season!  I competed in this informal race,
and took a photo of this swimmer as we swam across the lake.

(Yes, I was swimming as I took this photo.  Didn't stop or slow my stroke.
After all, I was in a race!)

At the Scituate Duathlon in Scituate, MA (October 6, 2013)

Packed behind the start line before a race, we are all like a giant spring
wound too tight...or a balloon about to pop.

Then the starter blows an air horn--and we BURST onto the road!

I took this photo just a moment after the horn blasted to start the race.

We were running in a cold rain.

(Yes, I took this photo as I was running.  This runner was just behind me.
I didn't stop or slow my pace.  After all, I was in a race!)

A cold rain couldn't dampen our spirits as we ran, biked, and ran on beautiful roads.

At the Buzzards Bay Sprint Triathlon in Westport, MA (September 22, 2013)

Good morning, friends!

Please join me in giving a giant THANK YOU!!! to all the volunteers who give us water--
and cheers and big smiles-- when we run, jog, or painfully walk up to an aid station!

I took this photo as I ran the final mile of the Buzzards Bay Sprint Triathlon.  (#BuzzardsBayTri).

At the Boston Barefoot Running Festival 5K in Boston, MA (September 14, 2013)

I snapped this photo as Barefoot Ken Bob was giving a workshop on barefoot running.

But he didn't call it a workshop.  "Sounds too much like work!" he said.

And he wouldn't call it a clinic.  "Sounds too clinical!" he laughed.

So I think he called it a funshop.  Because barefoot running--
especially as taught by Barefoot Ken Bob--is FUN!

At the 1-mile Sharkfest Swim across Newport Harbor in Newport, RI (September 28, 2013)

As he surges up the crest of a wave, this open water swimmer
(clad in black and trailing the leash to his wetsuit zipper)
looks to me like a leviathon pulling whalers on a Nantucket Sleighride!

(I took this photo as I was swimming next to him--just a couple of feet away.
I didn't stop or slow my stroke.  After all, I was in a race!)
