What the well-dressed runner wears on a bitter cold morning! At the Fudgcicle 5K in Tewksbury, MA.

At the Fudgcicle 5K in Tewksbury, MA (January 4, 2014)

Cold weather kills.

Or, more precisely, exposure to bitter cold and wind will kill,
if you are not dressed properly.

(For more on this, see "To Build a Fire," by Jack London.)

On this Winter morning, the mercury is stuck at 7 below zero.
Winds make it feel even colder than that.

So the runners at this local 5K race dress appropriately.

Even this strangely-dressed character!

No, he won't win a fashion show.

But he has no exposed skin.
His fingers are warm in those bright orange mittens.
And his face is protected by that DIY facemask.

So he'll run 5K in weather cold enough to freeze a brass monkey.

And he'll finish the race with a big smile!

(Not that you'd see it, behind that bank robber's face mask!)

If you run in extreme cold, follow this man's lead:

Cover all exposed skin, even if it is only with a thin layer.

Be safe, my friend!

P.S.  No runners were harmed in the making of this blog post.
The runner shown above is ME!

I don't care if I'm unfashionable.  (That's pretty much unavoidable.)

But I DO want to avoid the pain and nerve damage
that come from running unprotected in extreme cold.)
